Many years ago we were enjoying the tremendous life that MLM success can give you. What I’m really trying to say, without actually saying it, is that I wasn’t really working my MLM business because I didn’t have to. Our company was offering some kind of incentive, it’s been so long that I really can’t remember what it was, but I had been goofing off for so long that I didn’t have any prospects in my prospecting pipeline.

It was the final day of the promotion and I was meeting with a successful businessman and sharing with him how great our business was. By this time I was no longer trying to convince people that my MLM opportunity was right for them, but I was selling really hard that day trying to qualify for that special promotion.

I finished what I knew was a great presentation and there was no doubt in my mind that this guy was going to sign on the dotted line. I was exceptionally proud of myself when my prospect said the words that I will never forget. “Scott, if your business is so awesome why do you have to have me sign up right now?”

My heart sank, and I struggled to answer his question. Then the right words just flew out of my mouth, “I don’t need you to do this right now” I said. Then I thanked him for being honest with me and realized that I had just learned a valuable lesson. Trying to convince people to join your MLM opportunity makes you look desperate!

Sure it’s easy to get frustrated and quit. Just imagine how much better you’ll be if you just stay in the game long enough to learn valuable lessons that will pay huge dividends over the next 5 to 10 years of your life. I’ve shared that story with thousands of people in my MLM business and some of them understood exactly why I was sharing that story with them. So they wouldn’t make the same mistake I did.

That day I blew it. Perhaps at some point in the future that prospect may have joined my team and perhaps he would have been an MLM superstar. That wasn’t going to happen now because I had given him the wrong impression of our industry.

How often do you think MLM rookies make that same mistake? One of the biggest reasons people fail in MLM is that they fail to learn valuable lessons along the way. It’s so much easier to start believing that MLM doesn’t work isn’t it? It can’t be my fault. What if you quit blaming everybody else and started to realize that we all have a lot to learn on the way to success?

Hopefully you’ve got an upline mentor to teach you how not to do this business, but even if you don’t, stay in the game and learn from your own mistakes. You’ll be amazed just how much you can learn and how much better you life will be when you do.

Watching Britney Spears self destruct is eerily similar to how most MLM newbies ruin their shot at life changing success.

I’m not listening to anybody.

If it wasn’t so sad and totally unnecessary perhaps Britney Spears ruining her life in front of our very eyes would be comical. Comedian Dennis Miller refused to make light of the situation in a recent interview because it’s so obvious that Britney doesn’t have a clue.

I’m deeply saddened by MLM newbies all the time as they choose to fail because they won’t listen to anybody, not even the people that want nothing but the best for them. We’ve seen hundreds, perhaps thousands of people come and go in MLM because they wouldn’t even stop to consider the possibility that somebody could help them.

What is it that drives us to go our own way when we make such devastating mistakes in our lives?

Success in MLM is not life or death, however failing to reach our potential and living lives of quiet desperation is cruel and tragic in its own way. What we’ve seen in more than a decade of phenomenal success in MLM invigorates us and saddens at the same time.

Having lived through our own personal “downward spiral” we can come to terms with what Britney is going through and can only hope that our experience, as well as hers, might inspire somebody to turn their life around.

Mired in mediocrity for almost two years, we couldn’t do anything right. Having been a successful radio and TV personality before that awful time in our lives only made it harder to accept the pathetic free fall that we were facing.

And then we found MLM. Sure the money has made a huge difference in our lives but it’s all the other things that our MLM opportunity has given us that has made the biggest difference in our lives.

Why don’t we talk about the personal growth benefits of MLM more often? Perhaps every MLM training should include the personal testimonies of the many lives that have been forever altered for the better, thanks to this much maligned industry.

If only MLM newbies and Miss Spears would start listening, perhaps they too, would find a much better life. So many lives could be so much better if only we would open our ears more often.

Success in MLM , as in life, doesn’t have to be as difficult as we make it.

I can do whatever I want to.

One of the reasons we love MLM so very much is that we own our own business. We are not required to report to work at a certain time or perform a task that we cannot stand wearing a certain kind of clothing that we would rather not wear.

In MLM we are our own boss, something we cherish but something that frequently causes well intentioned MLM newbies to fail. Although we haven’t heard Britney say it, the way she blatantly ignores the words of all who care about her, implies that she relishes the opportunity to remind the world that she can do whatever she wants to.

Such is the battle cry of many an MLM failure! It’s my business and I can run it any way I want to.

Yes you can, but sadly with that attitude you will, most likely, fail to achieve any success whatsoever.

Like we said before, if it wasn’t so tragic, it would be comical.

Laurel (my wife and business partner) and I have been “connected” to the MLM industry for a long time, either as customers, as business builders or as trainers. We love the industry, almost all of the products and services it offers, and most of the companies in it.

But we disagree with much of the training. We think the training – or lack thereof – is the Achilles’ heel of MLM. It’s why, in our opinion, the vast majority of the well-meaning and hardworking distributors fail. Miserably. For one thing, it doesn’t teach distributors what to say and do to REALLY get people’s attention – and without attention, there’s no interest, no reaction, and no action.

And we’ve observed their failure to communicate properly – that’s what it comes down to – everywhere distributors market and advertise their products or opportunity: at networking events (especially), with their Web site, their capture page, business cards, sizzle cards, flyers, ads, emails, etc. Everywhere.

Let me share with you the best tip we gave people when we used to do live or telephone training sessions: Imagine, from now on, that every person you meet – online or offline – is a four-drawer filing cabinet. Your simple job – we didn’t say easy – is to get them to open a “mental drawer” to take in your information in order to make a decision about your products and business opportunity, with the hope that in the end, they will discriminate in your favor.

The only two questions in your mind at this point should be: “What does he mean by ‘opening a mental drawer’?” and “How do you do that?”. Great questions. Let’s answer them one at a time.

Imagine that everyone is a filing cabinet with legs, feet, arms and hands, neck and head. As you probably suspect – just look at your own life – this “filing cabinet” is bombarded daily with hundreds, perhaps thousands of messages, from the outside – come to this event, register for this course, buy this brand of car, this house in this part of town, this shampoo, eat these cereals, eat at this restaurant, go there for your holidays, send your daughter to this school, use our credit card, our cellphone package, etc.

There are also a lot of messages coming from the inside – gotta renew my membership this week, gotta call the accountant, gotta order more checks from the bank, gotta change the batteries in the smoke detector, gotta get the oil changed on the SUV, gotta do this, gotta go here, gotta buy that…

Here’s what uninformed MLMers too often do: they bombard the poor soul with worthless words that just bounce off the sides of the filing cabinet and pile up at the bottom, words that will never be read, heard or referred to ever. Let me lift a corner of the veil and reveal why these words are worthless: these words speak of features and particulars. I’ll elaborate on this in a minute.

Let me share with you a very wise observation from a marketing genius named Michel Neray: “If you’re like most people, you try to tell as much as you can, as quickly as you can, in order to give your prospect as much information as possible in the hopes that something will trigger some interest. After all, you’ve got excellent credentials to describe great case studies, impressive expertise and a gazillion years of experience, and you really, really know what you’re talking about, right? If you never seem to get people as interested as you had hoped they would be, here’s why: the person you’re talking to simply can’t process all the information you’re overwhelming him with, and consequently, he just tunes out.”

They tune out. They tune out because you give them too much information, yes, but more important, they tune out because you give them the WRONG information. I’ll address that in the answer to your second question.

Your mission, when you are marketing and advertising your wonderful MLM opportunity and your fantastic products or services, is to get the person you are communicating with to pull open one of the drawers to receive and store your information – the information they’ll need later to make a decision.

Bluntly put, if you don’t get them interested enough – if you don’t get their ATTENTION – for them to open that mental drawer, you are SOL. Finished. Kaput. Sayonara. Va con dios amigo!

If they don’t open the drawer, they will NOT visit your Web site, they will NOT keep your business card or sizzle card, they will NOT read your flyer, ad or email. Consequently, they will NOT buy your amazing products and will certainly NOT join your business opportunity. EVER!

Now, your second question was (should have been) “How do you do that?” Here’s how: first, you start my remembering that the most listened-to radio station anywhere on the planet is WIII-FM – What Is In It For Me. Then, you tell the person what is in it for him or her if they buy your products or join your business.

Give them the BENEFITS, first. Not the features, not the particulars, not how many years the company has been around, the fact that they’re in 12 countries already, that your upline makes 10 grand a month, that you’ve signed up 16 people in the last week, that if they buy now, they get two for one and free shipping, or the fact that you can re-insert yourself in your own leg by buying extra positions. WHO CARES?

I’ll tell you who cares: someone who has just taken in, tasted, chewed and digested a fantastic benefit for them. Someone who has asked – verbally or in their head – the question “How do you do that?“ or maybe “Can you tell me more?” When they ask one of those two questions – consciously or subconsciously – they’ve now open a drawer and they are ready and willing (eager even if the benefit is huge) to take in your info and read it, watch it, listen to it, ponder it, study it attentively later. You’re “in”! You’re on first base!

Features tell, benefits sell! Features make the “filing cabinet” airtight, benefits open up drawers. Don’t get me wrong, people will need the features, the particulars, the details to make a decision – LATER! But they FIRST need to see the benefits, or all the other stuff will be of no interest, no value. And what do people do – what do YOU do? – with things that are valueless? You discard them.

One more thing about benefits and features: you need to know the difference.

This is a serious problem I observe daily in MLM campaigns everywhere: most MLMers, it seems, don’t know the difference between the two. Let me shed some light on this. A feature is what something IS or HAS (a compensation plan with an auto-ship) while a benefit is what something DOES (it guarantees your income from month to month). And even better if you can express the benefit(s) in terms of what that thing does FOR me, the prospect (What Is In It For ME!!!).

For example, which one of the following two approaches do you think has a better chance of enticing Bob to open up a drawer and store your information for future consideration?:

“One thing I like about our comp plan, Bob, is that the customers get their products via auto-ship.” (Bob thinking: “Who cares?”)

“You know Bob, because your customers get their product via auto-ship, your income is guaranteed every month, even if you spend half the time away from the office, doing what you really like to do…”

(Bob dreaming: “… like fly-fishing, playing golf, building the cottage…”)

In conclusion, people lead busy lives. They pay attention only to things that they consider of value, to THEM (WIII-FM…). Benefits represent value, features don’t – not until there is a benefit. If you want to get people’s attention, give them a good reason for action – aka the right information. That’s the only way to get them to open their mental drawer. When you get enough people to do that, sky’s the limit.

Prospects are basically the foundation of any business, as they are the potential customers to the business. So just how do YOU find MLM prospects?Let’s start out with a definition of the word promote, which is the most important word in finding prospects for your MLM business. The word promote means: to make known.I was recently doing some MLM training with a person in my downline. She needed some help with her business, which was not growing. As I asked various questions I finally found the “nasty bug” that was stopping her network marketing business from moving forward. She didn’t want to come off as being or sounding sales-y. This stopped her from promoting.HOW DOES EVERYONE ELSE PROMOTE?A politician promotes how he/she can make a whole community’s life better; so he’s/she’s making herself known to the public by promoting and making known to as many people as possible what he/she can do for them. If you’ve noticed, politicians promote on TV, radio, signs stuck in the grass or on telephone poles along a busy street or maybe speaking at various group meetings.A college promotes what courses it offers. It might promote on radio, might promote to high schools or through sporting events. A stockbroker promotes that he can help his/her prospect make money. A local restaurant will promote via radio, or mailing brochures or discount coupons.THE WORST THING YOU CAN EVER DO IN YOUR MLM BUSINESS CAREER IS TO THINK, PONDER, WORRY OR EVEN GET THE IDEA THAT IT’S UNPROFESSIONAL TO PROMOTE!You really need to know and understand promotion. The only way you can have prospects, therefore customers or distributors, is to promote. The only way for you to make money in network marketing is to promote. You can write down your dreams and goals and study them every night, but you’re as effective as a billboard in the middle of the desert. No one knows you exist until you make yourself known. So if you ever find yourself where your business isn’t growing or you don’t have enough prospects, enough customers, or enough distributors, what do you do? Promote! WHY DO YOU PROMOTE? The reason you promote is to create desire for your product. If you don’t create a desire for your product, it’s very difficult to achieve MLM success. How would you know that someone desires your product or business? Well certainly if you sent a postcard and someone called the number, that’s someone showing desire in your MLM Business. Even if a person called and asked, “How much is this,” it would still be someone showing desire or at least slight interest. If you called a friend and asked them to look at something and they said, “Send it to me,” that’s showing a desire. People sometimes refer to desire as “responses,” as in, someone responded to my promotion.DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROMOTIONSo now let’s talk about different types of promotion that create desire. You could promote your MLM Business in:1. The Help Wanted, the Sales and Marketing or the Business Opportunity sections of a newspaper.2. Advertising section of magazines. 3. In fact, if you use traditional promotion with the mindset of just finding a network of people to work , you will fare far better than most who only measure their responses with how many people respond to their advertisement. You can turn one response from a promotion into thousands if you properly network. One other place to find prospects for your business is to promote to MLM leads that you purchase from a lead company. The advantage of this is you’re only paying for those who’ve responded and you’re not paying for all the people who didn’t respond. If I send out 10,000 postcards and get 20 responses, then I paid for 9,980 post cards that didn’t get a response.The advantage of writing your own ads of course is being able to target your specific audience with your specific product or opportunity message, which is VERY important and should not be underestimated. In contrast, when you buy leads, you’re buying general ads; perhaps people who’ve responded to wanting a home-based business. The other downside to buying leads is that very often, lead companies resell their leads to more than just you; so you’ve got extra competition to deal with.THREE BROAD WAYS TO PROMOTENow it probably sounded like I just contradicted myself; I didn’t. I just saved you years of running in circles trying to figure out the advantages and the disadvantages to generating your own leads or buying leads. This is the game. You must promote. There are three broad ways to promote.1. Networking: this costs the least. You’re going to have the costs of meals with prospects and the costs of joining clubs/associations. So I have rock climbing club fees, I have mountain climbing association fees, horseback riding fees, mountain biking fees; these are like $50-$100 dollars a year. 2. Buying leads: this is more expensive than networking, but less expensive than generating your own. It has some advantages and disadvantages: sometimes you get some hot leads; sometimes, you swear you’re calling a graveyard. 3. Generating your own: this is the most expensive, but has the advantages of targeting your prospects. MLM failure after MLM failure, that’s the way my MLM career began. Sadly, most people give up on MLM before they ever achieve any success whatsoever. What I didn’t know at the time, was that all my failures were actually preparing me for phenomenal MLM success!

You may have failed at MLM over and over again, but have you ever stopped to think what you have learned along the way? If you’ve paid any attention at all you’ve learned a lot more than you probably realize. If nothing else you’ve certainly learned what not to do!

MLM isn’t about convincing people to do anything. Most MLM rookies make this mistake so often you would think that they would begin to understand. The harder you work to convince your prospects that this business will change their lives, the more likely they are to never get involved in the industry.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way even after I had become incredibly successful. It’s entirely possible for you to still be learning valuable lessons even after reaching financial goals that you thought would elude you forever.

Many years ago we were enjoying the tremendous life that MLM success can give you. What I’m really trying to say, without actually saying it, is that I wasn’t really working my MLM business because I didn’t have to. Our company was offering some kind of incentive, it’s been so long that I really can’t remember what it was, but I had been goofing off for so long that I didn’t have any prospects in my prospecting pipeline.

It was the final day of the promotion and I was meeting with a successful businessman and sharing with him how great our business was. By this time I was no longer trying to convince people that my MLM opportunity was right for them, but I was selling really hard that day trying to qualify for that special promotion.

I finished what I knew was a great presentation and there was no doubt in my mind that this guy was going to sign on the dotted line. I was exceptionally proud of myself when my prospect said the words that I will never forget. “Scott, if your business is so awesome why do you have to have me sign up right now?”

My heart sank, and I struggled to answer his question. Then the right words just flew out of my mouth, “I don’t need you to do this right now” I said. Then I thanked him for being honest with me and realized that I had just learned a valuable lesson. Trying to convince people to join your MLM opportunity makes you look desperate!

Sure it’s easy to get frustrated and quit. Just imagine how much better you’ll be if you just stay in the game long enough to learn valuable lessons that will pay huge dividends over the next 5 to 10 years of your life. I’ve shared that story with thousands of people in my MLM business and some of them understood exactly why I was sharing that story with them. So they wouldn’t make the same mistake I did.

That day I blew it. Perhaps at some point in the future that prospect may have joined my team and perhaps he would have been an MLM superstar. That wasn’t going to happen now because I had given him the wrong impression of our industry.

How often do you think MLM rookies make that same mistake? One of the biggest reasons people fail in MLM is that they fail to learn valuable lessons along the way. It’s so much easier to start believing that MLM doesn’t work isn’t it? It can’t be my fault. What if you quit blaming everybody else and started to realize that we all have a lot to learn on the way to success?

Hopefully you’ve got an upline mentor to teach you how not to do this business, but even if you don’t, stay in the game and learn from your own mistakes. You’ll be amazed just how much you can learn and how much better you life will be when you do.

You’re starting out in your fantastic new MLM company as a MLM consultant. The two who get two who get two myth lasts about 6 months if you’re stubborn. Then what? Your warm market is gone – your circle of friends has shrunk, and many of them get this ‘fight or flight’ look on their face as you approach them.

What do you do now? Well, you do what a good MLM consultant should have been doing from the start.

Lead.

Why lead? Well, noone ever FOLLOWED anyone else to success as an MLM consultant. People are looking for someone to follow and you can look for MLM consultant to follow or be the MLM consultant leading the followers. This is NOT about standing up in front of people and giving out long-winded speeches about how great you are.

It’s about positioning yourself as a great mlm consultant with your terrific product. In all honesty, a prospect can buy your product off 6-10 different people, I mean looking at Mona Vie, Usana, Mannatech, Veema, etc… Niche marketing (particularly as in MLM consultant) is very difficult – there are just not really niches left. What the prospect is looking for is a leader, an expert, someone who can help them with their problem.

Noone looks to a follower for advice, help, and most importantly, direction. If you want an average life, do the average thing, and get a 9-5 job. If you want an extraordinary life, be the MLM consultant who directs people who are looking for an answer to their problem and lead them to an answer.

What does a leader MLM consultant do? Well … they;

- Keep going strong when everyone else is faltering.

- They are ready to learn new techniques.

- They work consistently at their business.

- They keep in regular contact with their downline, pepping them up when they’re down.

- They provide systems that their downline can use to be successful.

There are lots more things leaders are, but this is an article, not a book…

You CANNOT be successful as an MLM consultant without being a leader. If you’re not prepared to be one – don’t bother being a MLM consultant to start with.

Now that your bottom lip is sticking out and you’re thinking, ‘But I’m not a leader… *sigh*’ FEAR NOT!! Countless studies have dispelled the myth that a leader is born, not made. Leadership is a skill, like riding a bike. Well, the future is looking brighter, now where do you go to become this all-powerful Leader MLM Consultant??

Well, definitely not to the supermarket.

There are some great MLM consultant training packages out there, you need to sort through and find one that is going to train you about how to be the finest MLM consultant this side of the South Pole. The training package MUST cover these areas;

- how to market your product, not your opportunity.

- how to use the advertising mediums of the written word, telephone and internet.

- how to position yourself as a MLM consultant who is a leader.

Here’s the cool part though. When you have learned how to do steps – and -, and when you do these things, you will automatically become a leader!!

I sense your forehead wrinkling a little.

When you have people ringing you up, wanting your product, they’re looking to you for advice and help with their problem. You are leading them!! You have positioned yourself in a place of authority and knowledge that they do not have. So they turn to you and you lead them to the solution for the their problem.

Your product.

After you have helped countless people solved their problem with your product, then you go buy your small country.

Hi. Is mlm success important to you?
I am sure it is. But, are you investing your time and hard earned money purchasing motivational tapes, mlm leads or tickets to seminars held by your network marketing company?
The truth is many network marketers do these things. However, after many months or even years their dream of saving time and money is still unattainable. This can be frustrating.
If mlm success is important to you then continue reading. That is what this article is all about. I will discuss hints that I picked up while running my own mlm business such as:
1. Not Focusing Too Much Attention on the Product. Not even if they are the best on the market.
We are trained to believe that the goods we can access are the best on the market. Therefore, everyone would want them.
Based on my experience in mlm, I do not think this is true.
In reality customers do not purchase products simply because we (network marketers) tell them that it is the best. Even if we personally had favorable results using the products. It takes a lot more than just that.
Furthermore, today the mlm industry is not a respectable business venture. Why is this?
Because of the poor prospecting strategies we use when selling our mlm opportunity.Here is an example.
I was invited to a meeting once by a network marketer. But his methods were so sneaky that I refused.
Here is what he did. He approached me and said, I have a business proposition for you but I cannot tell you what it is right now. However, I will explain everthing tomorrow at 7:30P.M.
I was so amazed that I did not know what to think. Then he continued by asking if he should book a seat for me at XYZ Hotel.
His network marketing strategy was unprofessional. I was convinced that his business was drugs or something illegal.
And unfortunately, this is the exact view many hold towards mlm. I guess the industry needs more professionalism.
And that brings us to my next point. Network Marketing is Not for Everyone.
Many consultants or IBOs believe that mlm can work for anyone. But the fact is not everyone can own and control a successful business, whether it is mlm or a traditional business.
Furthermore, not everyone wants to be business owners. Some people are quite happy as employees.
Sure, being an employee has its disadvantages. But some workers are comfortable trading time for money and would not give that up to become a network marketer or any other type of business owner.
Moreover, there are people who get into network marketing to get rich quick. They are the worst downlines you can ever have and should be avoided.
Then there are those who do mlm because they are buying hope. This means that they are not interested in learning to win at business but are relying on luck. They too should also be avoided.
So here is my advice. If you spend precious time and money on persons who are not cut out for mlm then you will run into financial difficulty and also have little network marketing success. Take a look at the video called The Quixtar Scam on youtube and you’ll see what I mean.
I know you maybe wondering how do I sell my mlm opportunity and products to the right persons to experience mlm success. Well, here are some questions hints.
Do business with only serious persons. In other words, do you thoroughly interview your prospects before you sponsor them into your mlm business or do you just accept anyone who says they are interested?
All serious businesses depend on a day to day business system for leverage. Is there a system in your mlm business?
Every successful organization has a monthly marketing budget. Do you have one?
Sales is the lifeblood of an mlm business. Do you know techniques of selling?
